The news special focuses on Colorado connections to 9/11 and its aftermath. Features include:

  • The New Normal: Air travel is different in the post-9/11 era. We talk to officials at Denver International Airport, the Transportation Safety Administration and travelers about air travel today.
  • Remembering the Day:  We hear reflections from two Coloradans who were directly affected by 9/11, including Sandy Dahl, wife of United Flight 93 Captain Jason Dahl, and a man who was in one of the World Trade Center towers when it fell.
  • War Refugees: We meet with Iraqi refugees who endangered their lives to help Americans in Iraq and had to flee their country for protection. Many have ended up in Colorado and share stories of their struggle to rebuild and fit in.
  • Soldiers: We team up with NPR’s award-winning photographer David Gilkey to tell the story of injured soldiers enlisted after 9/11. They now battle post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other wounds. We profile soldiers who are using physical exercise to overcome the challenges of returning to civilian life.
