El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa plans to retire at the end of the year, two weeks before the end of his third term.

Maketa, who played a leading role in responding to fires in the Colorado Springs area last year, was accused of having affairs with three female subordinates, creating a hostile work environment and budget improprieties. He has apologized for what he called inappropriate behavior but had said he would not resign.
