This story first aired Oct. 24, 2016. The film will be playing this weekend in Denver.
The famous post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh once wrote, "We cannot speak other than by our paintings." He penned it in a letter shortly before he died. A new feature film takes those words quite literally.
"Loving Vincent" is animated entirely with oil paintings on canvas, approximately 64,500 of them, according to co-director Hugh Welchman.
It took 115 painters working long days to get the job done. One of them is Dena Peterson of Monument, which is outside of Colorado Springs. The figurative and landscape painter recently returned from Gdansk, Poland, where she worked on the film for five months.
Peterson spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
