“The War Begins: Clyfford Still’s Path to Abstraction”

This exhibition of painter Clyfford Still’s early work offers a look into the artist’s personal and creative journey during the World War II years. Of the 65 works included in “The War Begins,” 40 are on public display for the first time, along with wartime photojournalism from Still’s library and blueprints from his shipyard job in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A collaborative effort of MacArthur award-winning movement artist Eiko Otake (of the famed performance art duo Eiko & Koma) and Japanese historian and photographer William Johnston, this photo and video exhibition captures the evacuated areas surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors which exploded after the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the northeast Japanese coast in March, 2011.

It also marks the opening of Sally Centigrade Art Gallery, a new Larimer Square exhibition space that focuses on art influenced by underground comics, punk music and hot rod culture.
