The state legislature took a snow day on Thursday afternoon and Friday, giving lawmakers time to travel home in blizzard like conditions. But for a few legislators the snow was cause for some fun Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Budget Preview
In the coming days, state lawmakers must cut nearly 800 million dollars from next year’s budget. Options are limited and the budget committee says at this point, everything is on the table. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Colorado Central Changes Hands

Since then the quirky newsprint publication has covered everything from the arts to water rights-as long as it was about central Colorado. Just last month they sold the magazine.

Health Care Proposals
The Hospital Affordability Act passed out of the Colorado House yesterday; it now heads to the senate. The measure aims to gives an additional 100 thousand people in Colorado health insurance by leveraging more federal dollars for Medicaid. But it’s not the only major healthcare proposal in the works this session.

House Passes Bill Aimed at Cutting Number of Uninsured Coloradans
A bill that aims to cut the number of uninsured in Colorado by 25% survived a vote by the full House yesterday. The measure would impose a new fee on hospitals, and use the money to extend Medicaid and other public programs to more poor Coloradans.

Colorado Springs City Council Elections: Darryl Glenn, D2
Ballots are in the mail for this year’s Colorado Springs municipal elections. The mail-in only ballots include district races and four initiatives. District 2 is essentially the northern area of Colorado Springs. Incumbent Darryl Glenn is running unopposed. I met with him at City Hall to talk about council and why he’s seeking reelection.

Oil and Gas Rules One Step Closer to Becoming Law
More stringent rules to govern Colorado’s energy industry continue to make their way through the state legislature despite the objections of Republicans who say it will cost the state jobs. The rules add increased protections for wildlife and public health. They still need a final vote before they can go to the Governor’s desk.

Foreclosure Time Out
A bill that aims to prevent more foreclosures across Colorado initially passed the state senate on Monday. The measure would let some homeowners take what’s called a foreclosure time out. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Estate Planning Bill Passes Senate
A bill that would make it easier for gay, lesbian and other unmarried couples to plan their estates cleared the state senate on Monday with bi-partisan support. The measure is expected to head to the Governor’s desk shortly. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Capitol Conversation: State Supreme Court Rules on Property Tax Freeze
The State Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of a property tax freeze that was backed by Governor Bill Ritter. Republicans argue that the freeze violates the state constitution and the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, known as TABOR.
