Colorado Public Radio Expands Broadcast Reach and Geographic Makeup of CPR News

CENTENNIAL, Colo., Jan. 9, 2017Colorado Public Radio (CPR) today announced plans to broaden the geographic makeup of its newsroom and expand the broadcast reach of its news service (CPR News) along the Front Range. Both efforts build on CPR’s organizational vision to be a statewide news and information resource for the entire Colorado community.

The geography of the newsroom will change through the hire of two locally based reporters – one in Colorado Springs and one in Grand Junction – who will provide additional resources to bolster statewide news coverage.

“Adding these positions will enable CPR News to produce more Colorado-focused news,” said Senior Vice President of Programming, Sean Nethery. “This will include providing local perspectives on the most important issues facing the state, giving Coloradans context and insight into what’s happening all across Colorado, not just in the Denver-metro area.”

The locally based reporters will join three additional hires who will be based in CPR’s Centennial headquarters. The new positions include an enterprise/investigative reporter, an additional digital producer and a new curation editor who will help CPR explore community events and develop material for podcasts.

In addition to new staffing resources, CPR is also expanding the broadcast reach of CPR News through the purchase of an AM/FM signal in Colorado Springs.

Contingent upon FCC approval, CPR News will be heard on 1490 AM and 102.1 FM in Colorado Springs, likely by the spring of 2017. CPR was represented in the transaction by Public Media Company. The Colorado Springs signals join two new FM translators that were recently added in Boulder and Pueblo, enabling CPR News to be heard on FM across the Front Range.

“Along with being grounded in new communities and expanding our coverage, it’s equally important that we’re easily accessible throughout Colorado,” said Nethery. “Greater accessibility helps ensure that we’re connected to the state’s large – and growing – population and can reflect key issues happening across the Front Range, balanced with news and stories emanating from across the state.”
