Sheriffs in Arapahoe and Boulder counties have issued fire bans in unincorporated areas due to extremely dry conditions. Most open burning is prohibited.

Denver International Airport has had only .04 of an inch of rain this month, according to Frank Cooper of the National Weather Service. He said the annual monsoon rains in late July into August did not occur this year.

“September is dry anyway, but it hasn’t helped that it was so much drier before that," he said.

Cooper said a saving grace is that the winds have not been bad during this dry spell. Cooler weather and rain may arrive by Tuesday.

The fire ban also covers Cherry Creek State Park and the city of Centennial.
