Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet will perform "White Fields" for free in Boulder's Holiday Park at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The dance will reflect on the world’s fragility, power and mortality, according to a press release sent out Monday morning:
Designed to sensitively raise awareness and encourage civic conversation about gun violence and its victims, the production will reflect on themes of alienation, isolation and connection.
Choreographer Robert Sher-Machherndl told CPR News that the dance company already prepared to make the announcement Monday before Sunday's early morning shooting in Orlando.
"It’s a complete and terrible coincidence," he said. "When we read in the morning the news, I was shocked."
Sher-Machherndl says the dance company chose to perform at Holiday Park in hopes that the public space will attract more people and help inspire more conversation.
"I don’t want to make a political statement," he said. "I don’t want to tell anyone guns, yes or no. It’s too big an issue."
Lemon Sponge Cake has applied for a grant from the City of Boulder Arts Commission to help fund the production of "White Fields."
Last year, the dance company premiered a piece called "White Mirror" commissioned by the City of Denver's public art program. The dance explored the Holocaust and themes of hope and reflection.
