DA: Greeley Officers Justified In Fatal Shooting

Prosecutors say two police officers were justified when they shot and killed a gang member following a chase through Greeley.

The Greeley Tribune reports 24-year-old Sean Ryan Mondragon, of Alamosa, robbed a woman at a bowling alley May 11, then led authorities on a chase up to Eaton and back before crashing his car at an intersection in Evans. Two Greeley police officers shot him as he tried to steal a car at gunpoint.

Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke says the officers' decision to shoot Mondragon was justified because they were protecting themselves and others.

Mondragon was wanted on a warrant for allegedly trying to hit an officer with his vehicle in Monte Vista. He also was wanted on a parole violation. Toxicology reports show he had methamphetamines, marijuana and alcohol in his system when he was shot.
