Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is seeking a Morning Edition Senior Host.

About the Position:

The Senior Host will serve as CPR’s new voice behind Morning Edition, integrating local, regional, and NPR content in service of Colorado audiences. This role is responsible for writing, producing, and voicing newscasts and local segments for Morning Edition, while meeting established standards for timeliness, quality, accuracy, editorial judgment, and on-air performance. The Senior Host will also be called upon to anchor live special coverage, such as breaking news and elections. As a key presence in the newsroom, this position helps set the tone for the day, both through the news delivered to listeners and the on-air personality that encourages audiences to tune in and engage with CPR’s broadcast.

The new hire is expected to reside in the greater Denver metro area upon starting - this is not a remote position. The expectation is that you are in the office / studio when hosting Morning Edition, with some opportunities for hybrid work outside of that.

About You:

As the person with the earliest start in the newsroom, this role is well-suited to a true morning person who brings energy, focus, and consistency to the shift. You are an engaging conversationalist with an ability to connect well with listeners. You have a deep curiosity about the news, a keen ear for strong audio, and a sharp eye for clear, compelling broadcast writing. You demonstrate strong editorial judgment, regularly identifying timely story ideas and topics, and collaborating closely with producers, reporters, and editors to shape coverage. You are a clear and thoughtful communicator, both on air and off, and are comfortable building relationships in the community to develop sources and trust. You welcome feedback, stay level-headed under deadline pressure, and remain calm and professional during live broadcasts, including breaking news and special coverage.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in journalism, including reporting or producing, with demonstrated experience hosting live broadcasts and news segments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This should include a strong ability to communicate in a conversational style when hosting and an ability to write news for broadcast with clarity, accuracy and strong editorial judgement.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of ethical, fair and accurate reporting.
  • Ability to operate the studio board during live broadcasts.
  • Experience with audio editing, production tools, and broadcast systems.
  • A demonstrated ability to generate great story ideas that speak to varied, real, human experiences.
  • Proven ability to connect with local audiences, developing relationships with sources and community members.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, meet deadlines, switch between tasks as necessary and work in a fast-paced, digital environment.
  • Ability to work five days a week starting at 4 a.m.

Education Equivalency

  • A fully relatable bachelor’s or master’s degree may replace some of the required years of experience needed to qualify for the position, but is not required for the role.

Even if you don’t meet every qualification listed, we’re interested in candidates who can bring unique skills, perspectives, and experiences to the role. At Colorado Public Radio, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, equitable and authentic workplace. If you're excited about this role, but your past experience doesn't perfectly align with every qualification in the job posting, we encourage you to apply as you may be the right candidate for this or other roles with us.
