A three-dimensional reconstruction of a skull found in Summit County. It was created by artist Beth Buchholtz of the Longmont Police Department.

The Summit county coroner is dealing with a mystery. Last year, skeletal remains of a white male were found in the White River National Forest, in the backcountry between Copper Mountain and Breckenridge ski resorts.

Nearby was a Glock .45 caliber handgun with the serial number defaced; a black, hooded North Face winter jacket; gold wire-rim glasses and a black Timex watch.

With no leads, Summit County turned to someone with a skill you might not expect -- a sculptor named Beth Buchholtz. She tells Colorado Matters how she uses the skulls of unidentified dead people to reconstruct what they might have looked like.
