Colorado Public Radio Classical Welcomes Renowned Conductor Scott O’Neil to the Airwaves

CENTENNIAL, Colo., Sept. 12, 2016 – Colorado Public Radio’s classical music service (CPR Classical) today announced a new collaboration with Scott O’Neil, former resident conductor of the Colorado Symphony. In a series of CPR Classical productions, O’Neil will provide perspective and context to explore classical music deeply while demonstrating its relevance today.

“Scott has a charismatic personality that will draw listeners in with his unique insights, guiding them on an extended and vivid journey of classical music,” said CPR Classical Program Director Monika Vischer. “His deep knowledge of the music and his immersion in Colorado’s classical community through conducting the Colorado Symphony will be a huge asset for CPR and listeners alike.”

Scott O'Neil

O’Neil brings practical expertise and extensive knowledge of Colorado’s premier classical orchestra to CPR. He continues to freelance conduct, arrange and compose for a variety of classical organizations across the Front Range, including for the Boulder Philharmonic and his own group, the Rosetta Music Society. During his nine-year tenure with the Colorado Symphony, O’Neil created the “Inside the Score” series, conducted traditional Masterworks concerts and facilitated collaborations with some of Colorado’s leading contemporary artists, including the Lumineers, DeVotchKa and Gregory Alan Isakov.

Prior to joining the Colorado Symphony, O’Neil was the associate conductor for the Utah Symphony for six years. Other organizations where he’s guest conducted include: the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Boise Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Florida Philharmonic, Phoenix Symphony, Portland Symphony Orchestra (Maine), Salt Lake Symphony and the Tulsa Philharmonic. O’Neil studied at the Oberlin College Conservatory, earning a performance degree in piano. He also has a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from Rice University.

“I admire the work that CPR Classical does, providing a valuable way for classical music enthusiasts to explore a broad range of works across the centuries,” said O’Neil. “I’m excited for the opportunity to contribute to that mission, giving CPR listeners a different framework to understand how and why the music was created, and to share it through a medium that’s widely accessible, yet intimate.”
