Centennial, Colo. October 24, 2017 – Colorado Public Radio News (CPR News) today announced that veteran journalist Kevin Dale will join the team as news director, effective Dec. 6. In this role, Dale will provide strategic direction to support Colorado Public Radio’s long-term vision to grow its news service and increase capacity for Colorado-focused content.
Dale has nearly two decades of experience leading major newsrooms around the country, including The Denver Post, where he spent 15 years and was the No. 2 editor for a news team that was recognized with three national Edward R. Murrow Awards and three Pulitzers. Most recently, he was the executive editor at Cronkite News at Arizona PBS, where he led a team of 15 directors and 150 student journalists to national awards, including the Society of Professional Journalists national award for best newscast.
“Kevin’s background and success leading versatile, large-scale newsrooms will be a tremendous asset, particularly given that we’ve grown our news team for the past ten years and have plans to double our current news staff of nearly 30 journalists,” says Senior Vice President of Programming Sean Nethery. “Kevin also brings significant experience overseeing technical innovations in delivering news across digital platforms, which will serve CPR well as we build on our vision to be a multi-media, statewide resource for Colorado.”
Dale is working to complete a master’s degree in liberal studies from Arizona State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Kansas State University. He also served as a Pulitzer juror and is active in the Online News Association.

Dale’s arrival allows former VP of News Kelley Griffin to make a return to editing stories and working on community engagement. Griffin has been with CPR since 1993, first as a business reporter, before becoming managing editor, news director and then vice president of news. During her tenure, CPR News quadrupled in size, digital news capacity was added and the newsroom created more ways to engage the community it seeks to serve. Griffin has received two National Headliner Awards, a national Edward R. Murrow Award, as well as honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press and the Colorado Association of Black Journalists.
