CENTENNIAL, Colo. – June 27, 2011– Colorado Public Radio (CPR) will start broadcasting a new music station on 1340 AM in the Denver metro area and online at cpr.org beginning this fall. The programming will focus on current contemporary music, including notable releases of the past 15 years and the earlier music that inspired it.
Mike Flanagan, general manager of Radio 1190 (KVCU) in Boulder since 2005, will manage the new station.
“The new station is for curious and engaged music enthusiasts who want to explore and discover the who, what, where, why and how of the current music scene and everything it involves,” Flanagan said. “This station will be for radio, computer and mobile listeners who want to understand the inspiration and background of genres and performers, the people and places that influence their sound and where to hear them live and local. Colorado plays a big part in this. You'll hear a lot of current local artists as well as those who came before.”
Flanagan will join CPR's staff in mid-July and spend the next several months hiring announcers and preparing for the launch of the new music station this fall. Flanagan has more than 30 years of experience in radio, including eight years with Colorado Public Radio in the 1990s as an on-air and Midday Mozart music host. In addition to his role as general manager of Radio 1190, Flanagan served as an adjunct professor in CU-Boulder's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
“Today's music reflects the influences of many genres,” Flanagan said. “So, in a given hour you might hear a mixture of rock, country, soul, folk, world, roots, and blues. The job of our announcers will be to provide a comprehensive music experience focusing on music discovery with a Colorado viewpoint. It'll be a fun and educational destination, complete with interviews, exclusive previews, vinyl classics and much more.”
“In-depth exploration of current music is a natural extension of our mission to enrich the Colorado community,” said CPR President Max Wycisk.
CPR will continue to broadcast in-depth news on 90.1 FM in Denver and other stations around the state. Classical music will continue at 88.1 FM in Denver and other stations statewide.
“Since the majority of our Denver metro listeners get their news on 90.1 FM, we don’t anticipate any issues for those who currently still listen to news on 1340 AM,” Wycisk said. “We'll have plenty of time to make sure listeners know about the change and make the switch to 90.1 FM as we prepare to begin airing the new station in the fall.”
Colorado Public Radio is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides 24-hour, in-depth news and music to about 450,000 listeners each week (Source: Arbitron, Spring / Fall 2010). More than 90 percent of CPR's funds come from the private support of listeners, businesses, and foundations.
