CENTENNIAL, Colo. – April 30, 2013 – Colorado Public Radio's (CPR) news team was recently awarded two National Headliner Awards, a regional Edward R. Murrow Award and a Colorado Broadcasters Association Award.
CPR Education Reporter Jenny Brundin's story, “Buy Low, Sell High,” won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for best large market feature reporting and took third place in the feature or human interest category from the National Headliner Awards. The story explored the lessons learned from students participating in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge.
Brundin was also honored for her reporting in the year-long series, “Following Trevista,” which won two first place awards, one in the category for single-topic news, series or feature from the National Awards for Education Reporting, and the other for best mini-documentary or series from the Colorado Broadcasters Association. “Following Trevista” investigated the turnaround process for a Denver pre-K through eighth grade school.
“Colorado Matters” took home the final National Headliner Award, winning third place in the documentary or public affairs category. The three examples that judges reviewed were: “MMJ Dispensaries Forced Out of School Zones,” “Sifting Through the Ashes” and “What Is Life Worth?” The stories explored location restrictions for Colorado’s medical marijuana dispensaries, a first-hand response from one of the victims of the Colorado Springs’ Waldo Canyon Fire and a look at how victims of the Aurora theater shooting should be compensated with public donations.
The Edward R. Murrow Awards honor exceptional achievements in electronic journalism, while the National Headliner Awards are one of the oldest and largest annual contests that recognize journalistic merit.
“Being recognized for such a wide variety of stories reflects the range and depth of our news team, as well as our commitment to covering issues that impact Coloradans,” said Kelley Griffin, CPR’s vice president of news. “Colorado Public Radio’s role in providing context and clarity amid today’s complex and ever-changing landscape is more important than ever. I’m honored to be working with this talented team of reporters.”
