Colorado Public Radio wins national & regional news awards

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – April 26, 2012 – Colorado Public Radio’s (CPR) news team was recently honored with a regional Edward R. Murrow Award and two National Headliner Awards.

General Assignment Reporter Megan Verlee’s story about an alligator handling class, "Getting Hands-On at Colorado Gators," won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for best use of sound. Since 1971, the Radio Television Digital News Association has presented Edward R. Murrow Awards to honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. Verlee's story also won first place in the category for feature or human interest story from the National Headliner Awards, one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing excellence in journalism.

Additionally, General Assignment Reporter Ben Markus’ "Local Firefighters Honor 9/11 First Responders" won third place in the category for breaking news or continuing coverage from the National Headliner Awards. The story also won a Colorado Broadcaster Association Award for best single event news coverage.

“We’re honored that two very different types of stories were recognized,” said Kelley Griffin, CPR news director. "It's a nice reflection of the range of reporting we do about the state, from the intense and touching story about the firefighters' 9/11 tribute to the off-beat and funny visit to Colorado Gators Reptile Park.
