CENTENNIAL, Colo., May 26, 2016 – Colorado Public Radio's classical service (CPR Classical) is launching a new weekly program to make contemporary music more accessible and demystify important pieces of the past century. Hosted by CPR Classical’s Matt Weesner, “Music Forward” debuts on June 4 and will air Saturdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
Intended for people with a curiosity for today’s classical music, "Music Forward" will connect listeners to this artful music genre through musician interviews, contextual storytelling and discussions of Colorado’s contemporary composers, musicians and performances.
“The program is appropriately named ‘Music Forward,’ because today's composers are doing just that—they’re moving music forward in significant ways,” said CPR Classical Program Director Monika Vischer. “We’re seeing this subtle but seismic shift where music crosses genres and surprises listeners with completely original sounds, based largely on giants of the last 50 years and beyond. ‘Music Forward’ gives context to our times and reflects the legacy we'll leave. Our listeners deserve a chance to explore the best of this music in-depth.”
Listeners can expect to hear music from composers such as Caroline Shaw, John Corigliano and Esa Pekka Salonen. “Music Forward” will explore works from the latest generation of composers who are redefining classical music, as well as minimalist composers like Phillip Glass and Steve Reich who broke new ground in the 1960s and ‘70s.
In addition to this new program, CPR Classical is preparing for its annual “SummerFest” broadcasts to celebrate and showcase summer music festivals in Colorado, including the Aspen Music Festival and School and Colorado College Summer Music Festival.
