CENTENNIAL, Colo. – Oct. 25, 2010 – Colorado Public Radio (CPR) Health Reporter Eric Whitney accepted the Colorado Healthcare Communicators' (CHC) Media Representative of the Year Award at the group's annual Gold Leaf Awards dinner on Oct. 21.
CHC members nominate individuals for the annual award, which was created to recognize a local reporter or editor for their commitment to health care reporting.
“Eric has a deep knowledge of health care in Colorado, as well as nationally and internationally,” said Kelley Griffin, CPR's news director. “He contributes to Coloradans' understanding of health care issues in the state, and that kind of depth is our goal for all of our news coverage.”
“In Colorado and around the nation, there's something new and different in health care every day,” said Eric Whitney. “It's great to be recognized for providing critical public health information that informs the collective conversation in our community.”
Since joining Colorado Public Radio in 2007 as the news team's dedicated health reporter, Whitney has reported on such diverse topics as medical marijuana, swine flu, rural medicine, biomedical research, and health care reform efforts. His position is funded by a multi-year grant from the Colorado Health Foundation.
Whitney's career in journalism has taken him to many parts of Colorado, other U.S. states, and Africa. Highlights include reporting on mental health in the United States and infectious disease in southern and eastern Africa; studying epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga.; and working as a freelance reporter in Cape Town, South Africa.
