The case of a 14-year-old who murdered his parents has reignited the debate over sending young people to adult prison. In 2009, John Caudle killed his mother and stepfather in the family’s home near Monte Vista, in the San Luis Valley. This month, Caudle was sentenced to 22 years in adult prison as part of a plea deal. Prosecutors called the murders “calculated and cold blooded.” The judge said given the circumstances, the sentence was appropriate. But there are people who have some real concerns with how this turned out. Among them is Kim Dvorchak of the Colorado Juvenile Defender Coalition. She’s been watching the case and attended the sentencing. [Photo: The Monte Vista Journal]
