The Denver Police Department wants to buy 800 body cameras for its officers. The cameras are mounted on clothing, or by the ear, like a bluetooth device, and they capture footage of police interacting with citizens. Hundreds of departments around the country already use them, including Fort Collins and Lone Tree in Colorado.
Police cameras have become a hot topic following the shooting of an unarmed black man by an officer in Ferguson, Mo. Some say that if officers there were wearing the cameras, it would have provided a clearer picture of an incident that has ignited furor over race locally and a national debate all the way to the White House.
In Denver, police are battling their own allegations of excessive use of force. They've already tested cameras downtown.
The Fort Worth, Texas police department was one of the early adopters of the technology. Chief Jeffrey Halstead speaks with Ryan Warner of "Colorado Matters" about their use.
