"The water that originates in Colorado is the most coveted in the nation, with 18 other states and Mexico thirsting for their share of this essential export."

Those are opening lines from a new documentary -- "The Great Divide," which premieres Thursday at the University of Denver.

Jim Havey made the film to help Coloradans understand where their water comes from, and why its future supply is in jeopardy. The state's population is set to double by 2050 and climate change has taken a toll on the entire Colorado River basin, according to the film. Havey said that as a result, water is no longer as cheap, abundant and readily available as it once was.

Havey spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner about the film.

After the Thursday premiere, the film will be shown around the state. See the tour dates here.
