When Ryan Tedder walked into our studio, he did something we’d never seen before. He examined our microphone.
"It’s a decent mic, " he says. "Probably the best mid-cost large diaphragm cardioid you could buy. It’s either a 4050 or 4053; I used to record with these mics."
Tedder, of Denver, knows what he’s talking about. He’s a successful music producer, who has written pop hits for the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce. He also writes and sings for his own successful band, One Republic. Earlier this month, Tedder was nominated for two Grammys for his work on British songstress Adele’s album, 21. He visits CPR's Ryan Warner to talk about songwriting and what's wrong with pop music.
