Gerardo Lopez joined a gang while he was growing up in Los Angeles. He moved to Colorado to get away from gang life but ended up in prison.
Today, he spends his time with kids, urging them to stay away from gangs through his group Homies Unidos Denver.
Lopez's life story is the subject of the new short film, "Clever," which premieres at CineLatino at the Sie Film Center in Denver Sunday.
The film's director, Alan Dominguez, speaks with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
