Scenes like this one in Lyons, Colo. have become more common since the passage of legalized marijuana. Under editor Ricardo Baca, The Cannabist has helped pot gain acceptance across the state.

When the Denver Post hired Ricardo Baca as its marijuana editor, a first for a mainstream newspaper, the nation took notice. Since its launch in November 2013, The Cannabist, the Post’s marijuana-specific website, has been a tremendous success; in October, for example, the site drew 885,000 unique visitors, more than High Times magazine. In addition, Baca was named one of the seven most powerful people in American cannabis in 2016 by Forbes Magazine.

However, last week Baca announced he’s leaving The Post and the website to join a marijuana technology startup. Baca has been vague on the details of his new position, only saying that more information will be released in the upcoming months.

Baca, who prior to joining The Cannabist spent 12 years at the Post as a music critic and entertainment editor, spoke with Colorado Matters host Nathan Heffel.
