A major court ruling that involves Google and its Android phone could affect thousands of Coloradans who work in the software industry, and many more who rely on the companies’ products. David Schachter, a Denver attorney who has followed the case, tells Colorado Matters about the long-running legal drama: Oracle owns a programming language called Java.
There are free (or Google thought free) parts of this that Google -- with a big Colorado presence -- used to build its Android smartphone operating system. It was offered as free, but there were terms and conditions (that weren’t clear apparently) The problem probably arose when Google’s system became wildly successful, while Oracle’s entrance into the mobile phone market failed.
