Boulder's Takacs Quartet is one of the most important classical ensembles to call Colorado home. The group tours internationally and has made essential recordings of the complete string quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven and Bela Bartok.

Recently, however, the musicians stopped by the CPR Performance Studio to play music from a composer who contributed just a single piece to the string quartet canon.

Maurice Ravel wrote his String Quartet in F in 1893, when he was 27. It's a classic, full of color and lyricism. Watch a performance of the first movement in the video link above.

Takacs Quartet is based at the University of Colorado, where they recently mentored the younger Altius Quartet. Watch the recent Altius session in the CPR Performance Studio, featuring music from Beethoven's String Quartet No. 6.

Or hear a conversation with Takacs first violinist Edward Dusineberre about life in the quartet and performing the complete Beethoven string quartets.
