Colorado Senate approves first police oversight bill

The state Senate approved a bill Tuesday aimed at making it easier for agencies hiring law enforcement officers to know if they’ve ever been accused of lying. That information has not always been made public in cases where an officer agrees to resign.

"I find this to be particularly important in our efforts to address some of the concerns that have been expressed both on a state and national basis," said one of the bill's co-sponsors, Sen. Ellen Roberts, R-Durango.

Now the bill will go to the House. Two other police oversight measures have support from both parties. One would collect data on officer-involved shootings. The other would have more than one jurisdiction review those shootings.
