News Feature: Bison Killings Highlight Tensions Over Open Range Law
In Park County, part-time resident Jeffery Hawn is currently weighing a plea bargain for a very unusual case. Hawn is accused of killing 32 bison belonging to a nearby rancher. The case is raising tensions between old and new residents and putting a spotlight on one of Colorado's oldest rules, the so-called 'Open Range' law.
Cows graze on both sides of a broken fence near where the killings took place.
Rancher Vern Wagner, in the white hat, says he tells new residents near his ranch about the fence out rule.
