Later today a group of Denver attorneys who advocate for the poor plan to announce whether they're going to sue the state of Colorado. At issue: food stamps -- a benefit one out of every eight people in the state receive. Federal law requires states to process food stamp applications within a fixed time period. In the neediest cases, 7 days, and more commonly, within 30 days. Ed Kahn, an attorney who's been battling the state for years on this topic, says nearly 20 percent of all new applications and 50 percent of all renewals are delayed. And when that happens, people temporarily lose their benefits. Colorado Public Radio's Zachary Barr has more. [Photo: flickr user teejayhanton]
