The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for the Rocky Mountain Region are set for this weekend in Denver. The event is free and open to the public.

“It’s not a competition,” Chris Mohr, a volunteer with the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, told CPR Classical. “It’s an audition, and it’s actually the biggest opera audition in the world.”

This weekend’s event is one of several regional auditions around the U.S. Saturday’s event will feature finalists from Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.

“We had 56 singers sign up,” Mohr said. “This is a larnyx-to-larnyx audition that takes you straight to the Met Opera stage if you win.”

The Colorado-Wyoming District finals begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rocky Mountain Regional Finals start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The winner heads to New York to appear at the National Grand Finals March 30 at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Charley Samson is the host of Colorado Spotlight, which airs at 7 p.m. Sunday through Friday on CPR Classical. He also shares his insights on classical music in segments airing at about 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays on CPR Classical.
