“‘Free Tuesdays’ advance the museum’s mission of making contemporary art accessible to broad audiences of varying ages, backgrounds and demographics," BMoCA Executive Director David Dadone says. "Offering a free day is one of the ways that the museum is partnering with the city to support its goals to heighten the visibility of the arts and cultural offerings in Boulder.”
BMoCA joins a number of other Colorado cultural institutions offering free general admission on select days.
Denver Art Museum offers free days on the first Saturday of each month and the free day is presented courtesy of Target and supporters of the SCFD.
SCFD Executive Director Peg Long says more than 100 free admission days are offered annually across the 300 organizations that are part of the SCFD collective. Long adds that those 100-plus free days total approximately five million free visits, which is about a third of the annual visits SCFD organizations report.
SCFD has since 1989 distributed funds from sales and use taxes to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver metropolitan area and many SCFD members use a portion of those funds to cover the costs of admission on free days, according to Long.
“It allows people, who otherwise might not be able to afford admission, to attend," Long says. "But, mostly, it’s a way of giving back to the public and thanking them.”
The Boulder museum will also continue its “Art Stop” program, another free offering from BMoCA, this summer. Geared towards children aged three to 11, the program invites families to spend time making art together. It occurs on the museum’s porch on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and kicks off April 12.
