The family of a police officer hit by a car during a student protest in Denver says he is breathing on his own.

Relatives of Officer John Adsit said in a statement Thursday that he has undergone 11 surgeries and has been moved to a long-term care hospital in serious condition. His tracheotomy has been removed, and he was able to stand for the first time last Friday.
