Denver to pay $50K to woman slammed into wall by cop

Denver will pay $50,000 to settle a federal lawsuit brought by a woman who was slammed head-first into a wall while handcuffed by a police officer.

Denver city councilors unanimously approved the settlement with Patricia Lucero Monday night.

The incident, captured on surveillance video, happened when police responded to a 911 hang-up call at an apartment Lucero shared with her boyfriend in December 2012.

According to police, Lucero was drunk, agitated, yelling obscenities and trying to move toward her boyfriend when Officer Marika Putnam pushed her into the wall in the building's hallway and then an elevator door. Denver's independent police monitor recommended that the officer be suspended but the police department instead ordered more training for her.

Westword has photos of Lucero taken after the incident. A warning though: They are graphic.
