"Wittenberg," a comedic original production by Boulder Playwright David Davalos, runs June 11 to Aug. 8 during the 2015 Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

The twist on a Shakespearean classic receives its regional debut Thursday evening at the University Theatre on the campus of the University of Colorado as part of the 2015 Colorado Shakespeare Festival (CSF).

“Wittenberg” follows a young, impressionable Prince Hamlet attending Wittenberg University in 1517. There, he encounters the diabolical Doctor Faustus, a fictional character from a play by Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe, and the seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation Martin Luther. Davalos describes it as an “interplay of language and ideas.”

“I hope audiences will have fun with the show,” Davalos says, “and maybe come away with a new perspective on one of Shakespeare’s greatest works of dramatic art.”
