The Durango city council has unanimously passed a resolution stating that the city is not -- and has never been -- a sanctuary city.
The Durango Herald reports that Durango has been listed online as a "sanctuary city" that shelters immigrants living in the country illegally. Such cities attracted national attention after an immigrant in the country illegally allegedly shot a woman in San Francisco, a sanctuary city.
A spokesman for the Durango Police Department says they will generally call federal immigration officials if someone in the country illegally is arrested for a felony or a violent misdemeanor.
A 2004 resolution states that the city will not use municipal resources to find, apprehend or deport immigrants, but the police chief says the city never did that to begin with.
