(Vic Vela/For CPR News)Richard Gabriel, left, chats with Gov. John Hickenlooper before Gabriel was sworn in to the state Supreme Court Monday, Sept. 28, 2015.
Richard Gabriel Monday.
Gabriel is a Yale graduate who has served on Colorado's Court of Appeals since 2008. He grew up in Brooklyn in a family that struggled financially.
“I never in my wildest dreams would have anticipated that I would be in this place from where I came," Gabriel said.
Gabriel plays the trumpet and quoted the late baseball great Yogi Berra during his swearing-in speech.
Gov. John Hickenlooper appointed Gabriel and says he brings a good mix to the court.
"He has that wisdom. But he's also fun to be around," Hickenlooper said.
Gabriel replaces Justice Gregory J. Hobbs Jr., who retired earlier this month.
