· Oct. 26, 2015, 2:12 pm

Health officials are disinfecting the Alamosa County Jail to kill mites being blamed for an outbreak of scabies.

According to the Alamosa Valley Courier, about 15 percent of the persons currently housed at the jail have shown symptoms.

The number of prisoners affected was not available.

Scabies can cause itching and a rash and can spread rapidly in crowded conditions. Officials say the outbreak is not a major health hazard.
