An investigation is underway after an inmate was found dead in her cell at the Montezuma County jail in southwest Colorado.

The Cortez Journal reports 47-year-old Dani Miller was found unresponsive and not breathing in her cell Saturday, a day after she was booked for failing to appear on assault and harassment charges.

Jail officials say she was highly intoxicated when she was brought to the jail. Her blood alcohol content was 0.289 percent, more than three times the legal limit for driving.

Jail guidelines require people with a 0.30 percent blood alcohol content or higher to receive a medical clearance before they are booked. Officials have confirmed that Miller did not receive medical treatment before she was jailed.
