State Investigates Excessive Force Claims In La Junta

State authorities are investigating whether police in La Junta used excessive force after picking up a man for being drunk in public.

Donovan Duran, a mixed martial arts fighter from La Junta, says police took him to Arkansas Valley Medical Center on Dec. 7 and beat him as he got out of the car. He is currently being treated at University Hospital in Aurora and says he may be permanently paralyzed from the waist down.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Medina said Friday that the agency is looking into what happened and said two police officers have been placed on desk duty as part of the investigation.

Medina says district attorney James Bullock asked CBI to investigate but the results of the probe will be turned over to a special prosecutor.
