A sheep who skiers plucked from deep snow at the Steamboat Ski Area has died despite the rescue.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today newspaper reports that skiers headed out Thursday to reach the sheep, which has been spotted days before sheltered in a crevasse next to a rock. The sheep was weak and malnourished and died Friday.

Ski area spokesman Mike Lane says sheep have been seen east of the Morningside Park area in the Routt National Forest for the past few months. Presumably, this particular sheep had strayed away from a herd that was grazing in the forest.
