Two tribes in Colorado are receiving $2.6 million in federal funds to improve housing conditions for low-income families.
The Cortez Journal reports that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the grants Tuesday for the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute tribes. The Indian Housing Block Grant allocations are distributed each year to eligible tribes or their designated housing entities.
The Southern Ute Tribe will be given more than $1.2 million and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe has been awarded about $1.3 million.
Director of the Ute Mountain Ute Housing Authority Joanne Lemmon says the funds will go toward securing infrastructure needed to construct up to 150 homes.
The money is meant to support various community development and affordable housing projects in Indian and Alaska Native communities.
