Current Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia said last fall that he would step down to take a job as president of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

Both houses of the legislature must approve Hickenlooper's nominee.

Hickenlooper’s selection to replace Garcia will be closely watched, since whoever that is will have a leg up if they decide to enter the 2018 governor’s race.
