Prosecutors won't file charges against a Colorado Department of Corrections officer who fatally shot a biker during a shootout at a Denver motorcycle show.
The Denver district attorney's office said Tuesday that 33-year-old Derrick Duran claimed self-defense in the violent January clash, making it unlikely a jury would convict him in the death of 46-year-old Victor Mendoza.
Prosecutors say Duran, a member of the Iron Order motorcycle group made up mostly of law enforcement, fired the first shot during the melee, injuring one person. Within a minute, Mendoza fired at Duran, grazing his body and hitting another man behind him. Prosecutors say Duran then returned fire, killing Mendoza, a member of the Mongols biker club.
The case put a spotlight on Iron Order, whose members experts say are increasingly becoming entangled in violence with other biker groups.
