The state Senate is moving forward with a Republican-sponsored bill that would ask Colorado voters to approve $3.5 billion in transportation bonds.
The package would replace existing voter-approved bonds that are set to mature next year.
Sen. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, says his bill would provide immediate funding for road projects statewide to ease traffic and fix crumbling roads.
“Transportation infrastructure is basically falling apart. Our roads are in terrible shape. You can’t drive anywhere without hitting a pot hole or part of the roads broke off," he said.
The bill is not without opposition. Democrats and Republicans are fighting over whether any of the bond money should go toward mass transit.
A similar transportation bonding effort died last year over repayment concerns.
