Managers have killed fish at two Colorado hatcheries because of a bacterial kidney disease.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports that Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials killed and buried all the fish at its Glenwood Springs hatchery after first noticing signs of the disease known as BKD in September.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also discovered the disease at its Hotchkiss hatchery and killed about half the fish there. The rest were successfully treated with an antibiotic feed.
Doug Krieger of Colorado Parks and Wildlife says some fish can carry the bacteria without outward signs, but others become lethargic, eat less or die from bleeding and renal failure. He says other states, including New Mexico, Wyoming and California, have seen an increase in the disease lately.
