"La Purpura de la Rosa (The Blood of the Rose) recounts the famous, fated, forbidden love affair between Venus, the Goddess of Love, and the very mortal and handsome Adonis. This version, in Spanish, with a libretto by none other than the great Golden Age dramatist, Pedro Calderon de la Barca, is told in one act. Filled with suspense, seduction, and comedy. The music is rich in harmonies, plaintive melodies and Latin American dance rhythms. First performed in Lima, Peru, 1701. Featuring Grammy-nominated Jennifer Ellis Kampani, soprano, Guadalupe Peraza, mezzo-soprano, and Nell Snaidas, guest director."
