Boulder Bach Festival: Festival Week: Next Generations
When
Event Description
"Next Generations explores work by later composers and features a rare 19th century Érard concert grand piano in pristine condition. The instrument traveled from Amsterdam to Boulder and offers a view into the colorful sound world that attracted Haydn, Beethoven, Liszt, Clara Schumann, Saint-Saens, Faure, and many others to the Érard pianos. Pianist Mina Gajić and Dutch soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg collaborate on some of Clara Schumann’s most special art songs. Gajić also presents a fantasia rich with depth and pathos, composed by Mozart. Violinist YuEun Kim, violist Jordan Bak, and cellist Coleman Itzkoff join Gajić for Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G Minor. The program also includes the work of a living composer, Gabriela Lena Frank. Her Suenos de Chambi offers a compelling view into the instrumental, vocal, and natural sounds of the Andes Mountains and Peruvian culture. Some years ago Carrettin performed the California premiere of the work alongside the composer, benefitting from learning about the nuances in this captivating piece. BBF’s performance is the first-ever to present Suenos de Chambi with a parallel-strung, Romantic Era piano. A pre-concert lecture covering the repertoire will take place in the chapel in addition to a masterclass."
