Colorado Bach Ensemble: I had much grief in my heart
When
Event Description
"Bach’s largest sacred cantata 'Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21 (I had much grief in my heart) opens with an atmosphere similar to Albinoni’s famous Adagio. The sublime and sorrowful Aria for Soprano and Oboe, 'Sighing, Weeping, Sorrow, Need' has been called the emotional heart of this cantata. Perhaps an homage to Vivaldi, Bach borrows a theme from his Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 3, No. 11, for a grand fugue subject."
