For nearly half a century, Charley Samson has been the voice of classical music in Denver.

He signed on with KVOD in 1970 when it was a commercial station. He’s been with CPR Classical since 1994. And he's hosted Colorado Spotlight, which covers the state’s classical scene, since 2003.

Samson is about to retire. He hosts his final shift Saturday afternoon, and a celebration of his career will air Friday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. on CPR Classical.

He spoke with Colorado Matters host Nathan Heffel about his early days in radio, the unusual Beethoven birthday celebrations of his teen years and how Colorado's classical scene has changed.
