Nigerian-born, Colorado-raised, Toluwanimi Obiwole often meditates on the duality of her identity in her poetry. The 21-year-old is Denver's first-ever Youth Poet Laureate. Since her appointment in March, she's spoken at city events, including the inauguration of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. She also has a forthcoming book of poems and prose, and performs at the Mercury Cafe in Denver on Sunday. Obiwole spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
Obiwole on the recent attacks in Nigeria:
"The Boko Haram terrorism has been going on [for a long time], and it is extremely disheartening," Obiwole said. "But at the same time, it puts this new determination in my heart that our generation can change something. ... There is a huge movement of kids who grew up overseas returning back home to Nigeria to work, to get involved in politics and to get involved in their home communities in order to make changes."
